Founded in the State of Florida in 1995, Gamma Eta Sorority, Inc. finds its origins as a student organization at the University of Florida, being first known as Gamma Eta Society. In the Fall of 1995, 17 ladies came together to form Gamma Eta under the leadership of Ilena Camilo, our founding mother. These women saw the need to form an organization that would offer the support system needed by women of different ethnic backgrounds at the University of Florida. Although they found many barriers in becoming formally recognized as a sorority, our founding mothers never lost sight of their dream and in the Spring of 1996, the founding class was initiated. It was not until August 2, 1999, however, that Gamma Eta was chartered and incorporated as an official sorority and was recognized as a Greek letter organization. Subsequently in November 1999, Gamma Eta was named as an associate member of the Multicultural Greek Council at the University of Florida and later became a full member in 2001.
